Synopsis
Act 1:
In a quaint village in the Basque Country, Nemorino, a poor peasant, is deeply in love with Adina, a wealthy and beautiful landowner who dismisses his affections. His hopes are further dashed when the boastful Sergeant Belcore arrives and proposes to Adina, who entertains his advances. Desperate to win Adina's heart, Nemorino seeks the help of Dulcamara, a charlatan doctor who sells him a "love potion" that is merely a bottle of cheap Bordeaux. Believing in the potion's magic, Nemorino gains confidence and starts acting indifferently toward Adina, sparking her curiosity and growing affection for him.
Act 2:
As events unfold, Nemorino's fortunes change when he inherits a significant sum from a deceased uncle, making him a more desirable match. Unaware of his newfound wealth, Nemorino considers enlisting in the army to earn more money to buy additional "elixir." Meanwhile, Adina realizes her true feelings for Nemorino and buys back his enlistment contract from Belcore, ultimately confessing her love for him.
Act 3:
The opera concludes with the happy union of Nemorino and Adina, while Dulcamara takes credit for the success of his so-called "elixir." The villagers celebrate the joyful union, and Nemorino and Adina embrace, marking the end of their journey to love.
