John Cunningham

Baritone  |  First Priest

After his Amherst College Glee Club years, John Cunningham was stationed in Augsburg, Germany where he spent most of his leisure time with the Opera Chorus of the Augsburger Stadttheater. This continued for five seasons after the completion of his Military Service, during which time he was in 18 productions including Parsifal, Meistersinger, Fliegender Holländer, Thannhäuser, Carmen, Les Troyen, La Forza del Destino, Sicilian Vespers, Trovatore, Fidelio, Boris Godunov, and lots of  Viennese Operetta.
Upon returning to his homeland John discovered Hancock County and its resident Gilbert and Sullivan Society singing either as chorus member or lead in more than a score of baritone roles including Dick Deadeye, the Mikado, Major General Stanley, The Sargeant of Police, John Wellington Wells, Dr. Daley, Sgt. Meryll, King Paramount of Utopia. Private Willis ,The Duke of Plaza Toro, King Hildebrand and Arac since 1986. In 1993 the company was honored as “best production”  and “best overseas company” at the 1st International G&S Festival in Buxton England.
John is excited to be reprising the Magic Flute Priest roles which he initially did as a member of Walter Nowick’s Surry Opera Company.
