The program of art songs called “Dreams and Awakening,” performed by soprano Danielle Woerner and pianist Kimberly Battaline, explores love of nature and human love, illusion and truth, and includes a dollop of pure play. The music is by British and American 20th-century composers Michael Head, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Otto Luening; Spanish folk songs set by classical composers Manuel de Falla, Joaquin Nin and Joaquin Rodrigo; and glimpses of other worlds by Francis Poulenc, Edvard Grieg and contemporary poet/songwriters Judith Kerman and Danielle Woerner.
Danielle Woerner, singer, teacher, and co-founder of the Sunrise County Arts Institute in Milbridge, began her career in New York City. She sings and teaches a broad range of musical repertoires and genres: classical, operatic, musical theater, jazz, folk, world. Danielle executive-produced her acclaimed solo CDs of 20th-century American songs and chamber music, She Walks in Beauty (Parnassus) with music of Otto Luening and Robert Starer, and Voices of the Valley (Albany), collaborating with the composers. Highlights of her performing career include giving a NY Times-acclaimed formal NY debut recital; European tours as a featured soloist with conductors Harold Rosenbaum(Spain) and Barbara Pickhardt (Germany); soloing with orchestras including the Hudson Valley Philharmonic and Woodstock Chamber Orchestra; and creating a principal role in the development, NYC premiere and recording of Barbara Benary’s gamelan opera Karna.
As a teacher in NY, she was Artist in Residence at SUNY/Ulster and with the Hudson Valley Youth Chorale, and taught singing for the Vassar College Drama Dept., Bard College Music Dept., and Dutchess (NY) Community College. Since moving to Milbridge, she ran the Drama Club at Narraguagus Jr-Sr High School from 2014-2020, developing new shows with the students; and as a faculty member of the Ellsworth Community Music Institute (ECMI), she has also directed its Youth Chorale. She teaches online as well as at her Milbridge studio.
Danielle, who earned her B.A. in Music at Bard and her Master’s Certificate in Songwriting from Berklee, is also a BMI-affiliated songwriter and published poet. Her most influential teachers and mentors include Nora Bosler, Richard Getke, Otto Luening and Bethany Beardslee Winham. https://daniellewoerner.com
Kimberly Battaline, pianist, began her accompanying career early, in the 5th grade when she began playing for school choruses. While still in middle school, the Chicago native music-directed a production of Winnie the Pooh. During her years living, studying and performing in south Florida, she played on several series, including Roots of Classical Music (in 4-hand piano works), and taught piano at a number of studios including her own. She’s played with the Mormon Orchestra of Washington, DC, and with chamber ensembles in DC and the Bahamas.
Kimberly, who now lives and maintains a teaching studio in Winter Harbor, came to Maine in 2011. In this region she’s taught music at the Peninsula School, accompanied the Sumner Choir, and works with ECMI as the Institute’s accompanist for student lessons, choirs and recitals. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Chamber Music & Accompanying at Florida Atlantic University, working with Judith Burganger & Leonid Treer. She’s been a church pianist and organist for 25 years, and she and Danielle have concertized together since 2019.
